Omelet Sunday • Honoring Retired D.C.F.D. Members • Sunday, July 20, 2025 • D.C.F.D. Training Academy On Sunday, July 20, 2025, starting at 0900 hours, at the D.C.F.D. Training Academy, all retired department members are invited to partake in the tradition of Omelet Sunday. This event provides an opportunity for retired members to reconnect and for the active department members, particularly the newest generation, to associate names with faces. After the morning event concludes, retired members are encouraged to visit city firehouses, especially those where they were previously assigned. The on-duty members will be eagerly awaiting the return of our retired members and look forward to welcoming them back at District firehouses. July 12, 2025

Sick List Addition: While late in mentioning this to the RFA, I underwent knee replacement surgery in May and am recovering at home. Please add me to the sick list. Jeff Stauffer June 6, 2025
Sick List Addition: Please keep Billy Ridgeway in your thoughts and prayers. Brother Ridgeway is battling bladder cancer. He has enjoyed the well wishes of those that have reached out so far so I’m sure he would love to hear words of encouragement from others. There is now a Washington DC Fire Fighters Memorial Foundation this is a 501c non profit. They are collecting money to put up a permanent memorial to the Fallen DC Firefighters. They are looking for sites, getting permits, hiring an artist to design the memorial. It is all in the early stages, but money is needed to get things moving.

A message from Local 36 regarding Vision Benefits Dear Members, As discussed at previous membership meetings, we are writing to inform you of changes to our Union's vision benefits. Due to increased insurance rates industry-wide, the cost of maintaining current coverage has risen significantly. As a result, the Local 36 Executive Board, in consultation with our benefits provider, has made the difficult decision to adjust our vision plan to ensure continued access to high-quality care while minimizing financial strain on the Union and our membership. Please be aware that we are actively working with several experienced insurance brokers to explore more effective and sustainable options for the upcoming fiscal year. While navigating this process is challenging without additional funding from the District, we remain fully committed to improving your benefits. Our goal is to deliver the level of care and coverage our members deserve, and we are working diligently to get there. Below is a summary of the key changes and essential FAQs: 2025 Vision Benefits Overview Plan Provider: UnitedHealthcare Vision Plan Website: myuhcvision.com Customer Service: (800) 638-3120 Copays & Coverage Changes Eye Exam $20 Once every 24 months Eyeglasses (Lenses + Frames) $50 Once every 24 months Contact Lenses (instead of glasses) $50 Once every 24 months Frame Allowance: $130 Contact Lens Allowance (Non-Formulary): $105 Note: Additional discounts (e.g., 30% off overages on frames, LASIK savings, second pair discounts) remain available through in-network providers. FAQs Q: Has the frequency of coverage changed? A: Yes. Exams, lenses, and frames are still covered once every 24 months. Q: What if my frames or lenses cost more than the allowance? A: You may apply a 30% discount to any overage when using an in-network provider. Q: Are contact lenses still covered? A: Yes. You can choose between glasses and contacts. Formulary contacts are covered in full (after copay), and non-formulary contacts carry a $105 allowance. Q: Is there coverage for children's or maternity vision needs? A: Yes. Children (ages 0-12) and members who are pregnant or breastfeeding are eligible for a second exam within 60 days and frame/lens replacements if their prescriptions change significantly (by 0.5 diopters or more). Q: Can I still use out-of-network providers? A: Yes, but reimbursement rates are capped (e.g., up to $40 for exams, $45 for frames). Copays do not apply for out-of-network services, and you'll need to submit claims directly. Q: Will there still be discounts on LASIK and additional eyewear? A: Yes. Discounts on LASIK (up to 35% off) and 20% off additional eyewear still apply after benefits are exhausted. We recognize that benefit adjustments can be frustrating. These decisions are never taken lightly, and we will continue working to secure the best possible care and coverage for all members. If you have questions or need help understanding your benefits, please don't hesitate to contact UnitedHealthcare Vision directly or reach out to your Union representative. The DC Bar Pro Bono Center has made an offer to do Pro Bono wills for our members making less than 60k a year. See below for more info, and attached flyer. Dear Mr. Partridge: I am writing to follow up on our conversation earlier this week regarding the “Wills for Heroes” estate planning project we are organizing for 09/11. Please find attached a flyer to send out to your membership and post on your website. We would really like to get interested individuals signed up and started on preparation by the end of this month, so anything you could do to bring this to the special attention of your disabled or older retired firefighters who would qualify would be appreciated. Thank you so much for your interest and all you do for fellow firefighters! Very truly yours, Murray MURRAY D. SCHEEL (he/him/his) Managing Attorney, Future Planning & Probate D.C. Honor Guard
In an effort to provide our retired brothers (at the time of their demise) with a dignified, and respectable presence, the Retired Association has decided to organize a "Honor Guard". This will not be a precision - spit and polish - drill team type concept, but simply a list of retired brother firefighters who may have known and worked with the departed, or at least served during the same time frame. Participation by this Honor Guard will be ONLY By request of the family, and only to the extent that the family desires.
To include but not limited to pallbearers, (active or honorary) - liaison between the family and visiting fire fighters, or simply lending a fire service presence.
The "uniform of the day" for this honor guard shall from this day forward be known as the "Lockrow Suit" which will consist of a navy blue blazer, white shirt, gray slacks, and black shoes (properly polished) and official Honor Guard tie issued by the Association.
For those who wish to participate, and do not own a "Lockrow Suit" we have made arrangements with "Men's Warehouse" for a very good discount on the blazer and slacks.
The more members who participate in this honor guard will provide for a large cadre to draw from meaning less travel and less frequent events.
Please give this Honor Guard serious consideration, and join us in providing our departed members with class, dignity, and proper respect.
To volunteer please contact :
