This effects retired members who are under equalization
Message from Local 36:
Brothers and Sisters,
I would like to thank the membership for their patience over the past two years, as your Union has been engaged in contract negotiations with the City. While the Local entered the process with an open mind and a will to negotiate in good faith, the administration had very different intentions. From day one they lodged an unexplained assault on every article in our contract, with special emphasis on unilateral changes to the disciplinary system, the promotion process, and contractual protections of our existing rights and benefits. It was the belief of your negotiating team that these rights must be protected and we could not give the fire chief and his appointee's unilateral control over your future. Although we were able to protect our rights we could not come to an agreement on wage increases for the membership. For this reason, we entered into Interest Arbitration over compensation in December of 2017.
Local 36's last best final offer was 17% over 6 years as follows:
2015-0%
2016-4%
2017-4%
2018-3%
2019-3%
2020-3%
The administration offered 12% over 6 years as follows:
2015-0%
2016-3%
2017-3%
2018-2%
2019-2%
2020-2%
We received notification today that the arbitrator accepted the District's last best final offer of 12% over 6 years while keeping the existing contract language. Additionally, we will be receiving significant increases in our supplemental insurance's. There is still work to do, however, we are hopeful that you will see changes in your pay implemented as quickly as possible, with backpay checks issued shortly thereafter. I will post all documents in the member's section of the web page as soon as possible.
Fraternally,

Local 36 attended an event put on by the IAFF regarding retirement, social security and Medicare benefits. This was sponsored by Nationwide Ins.. Nationwide provided forms to fill out and send in. They would in turn send back recommendations for what would be the best options for you. The RFA and L-36 are attempting to get a Nationwide rep to attend an upcoming RFA meeting to give a full overview of the program.
Message from Larry Sheldrake (Local 36 Treasurer and RFA member)
Here are the Assessment Fact Sheets from Nationwide regarding Social Security and Medicare Benefits. All of the Information can be read on the sheets. The IAFF has endorsed this program for all members.
Thanks,

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p575.pdf
For distributions beginning in 2007, you can elect to exclude from income distributions from an eligible retirement plan that is a governmental plan if you are an eligible retired public safety officer. The distribution must be transferred directly to an insurance provider to pay premiums for accident or health insurance or qualified long-term care insurance for you, your spouse, or your dependents.
The maximum annual exclusion is $3,000. You cannot deduct these premiums as medical expenses or, if you are self-employed, health insurance costs. For more information, seeInsurance Premiums for Public Safety Officers in Publication 575.
